100 GW installed solar power capacity by Dec ’22: How far has India reached yet

According to data released by MNRE, 31,696 MW of grid-connected solar power generation capacity has been installed in the country, work on the installation of another 17,998 MW capacity is being undertaken in various stages and tenders for projects of 31,696 MW capacity have been issued by October 2019.

In a written reply to a question in Lok Sabha, R.K. Singh, Union Minister of State (IC), Minister of New and Renewable Energy, Minister of Power and Minister of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship stated that the government is all set for achieving the target of 1,00,000 MW grid-connected solar power capacity in the country by 2022.

“With new tenders of around 15,000 MW planned in the remaining period of 2019-20 and 2020-21, we are on course for achieving the target,” he said.

State/UT-wise details of the solar power generated in different states and union territories were also given in the statement. As per data reported by the Central Electricity Authority, a combined capacity of 13, 499.41 million units (MU) of solar power was generated during 2016-17. Indicating a steady year-on-year growth, figures for the same stood at 25,871.07 MU during 2017-18, 39,268.20 MU during 2018-19 and 22,944.81 MU in 2019-20 (till September 2019). While Rajasthan was the top solar power producer in 2016-17 with a produced capacity of 2,131.61 MU and Telangana in 2017-18 with 4,013.80 MU, Karnataka has been the leader in the field since with a produced capacity of 7,575.83 MU during 2018-19 and 4504.35 MU in 2019-2020 (until September 2019).

Upfront installation cost is one of the primary concerns that hinder the adoption of solar energy in India. To address this challenge, the Ministry is also making efforts to financially aid the installation of solar projects. MNRE has released Rs 2,590.59 crore in FY17, Rs 1,889.93 crore in FY18, Rs 2,524.65 crore in FY19 and Rs 1,513.49 crore in FY20 (as of 1/10/2019) through various solar power schemes.

Apart from that, several schemes such as Solar Park Scheme, schemes for the installation of grid-connected solar rooftop power plants, Off-Grid Solar PV Scheme, Pradhan Mantri – Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan (PM KUSUM) Scheme, etc. have also been launched as a part of the National Solar Mission. Addressing concerns over the proper propagation of information about these schemes to the public, Singh said, “the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy makes publicity for effective implementation of all the schemes including solar schemes through print, social, electronic and other media.” He further added, “The Ministry has also launched a Mobile App for solar rooftop systems.”
