2020 Tokyo Auto Salon, Pt. 4 – Super Street Network

We’ve been home only a couple of days but are already having the best kinds of flashbacks going through this last lot of lush imagery from the 2020 Tokyo Auto Salon. While the weekend was a blur, the mega-show comes through as always with killer builds, and it’s always great to reconnect with our industry friends and get a sense of trends on that side of the Pacific. This last batch of photos includes a pair of bar-raising VIP builds, a couple of interesting engine swaps, and overlanding minivans and Jimnys, plus a whole lot more from the Makuhari Messe convention center.

Fight with Liberty Walk! We don’t know what the hell that was about, but we do know a lot of people were losing their shit over this ER34 Super Silhouette Skyline they created for the show, a mildly exaggerated widebody that looks like it could’ve stepped out of the JGTC (well, maybe not with that lip …) For the uninitiated, the ER34 was the designation for the R34-gen. Skyline 25GT (and not the GT-R, which is a common misconception), and this one came on air bags, so we’re not entirely sure about its track worthiness-but it did look fly slammed on those Advan GTs.

Who did it better? On one end of the spectrum, TAS had a Mark III Toyota Supra that had been converted to electric (one of our top 3 cars from setup day); and on the other end of that spectrum, a Toyota Crown Deluxe from the late 1950s with a 1JZ inline-6 swap out of a Crown Estate Athlete wagon from the year 2000-an engine so long for the engine bay, it appears to actually protrude into the cabin. The A70 gets points for the new Work Seekers (we think) it rocked at its corners, but that Crown was pretty ridic …

To borrow from social media (we don’t know who said it): enough with the coupes-how about some yachts? We already mentioned one of our favorite VIP builds from TAS in our Part 2 coverage, a familiar K-Break Celsior-nosed LS; in the same vein was this big-booty Nissan President hunkered down on Work Zistance W5S rollers, the very picture of what we expect from this corner of the scene, save for the interior. While custom Recaros are always nice, we probably would’ve gone in a different direction than purple and white, but to each his own!
