Abundantia Entertainment brings US horror content studio Crypt TV to India

MUMBAI: Crypt TV, a US studio specialising in horror-themed digital content, is set to enter India in partnership with producer Vikram Malhotra’s Abundantia Entertainment.

Crypt TV, founded by Jack Davis four years ago, has already raised over $11 million from investors including Hollywood producer Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Productions (known for ‘Paranormal Activity’, ‘Insidious’ and ‘Us’), media mogul Shari Redstone’s Advancit Capital, Huffington Post cofounder Kenneth Lerer, and media conglomerate NBCUniversal.

Crypt TV and Abundantia will coproduce two horror series and bring the Crypt brand to India and create new scary intellectual property (IP).

Malhotra, founder and CEO at Abundantia, told ET that the alliance has the “potential to be a game changer” not just for genre-focused content in the country but also in terms of how the two will build stories working with creators from each other’s home markets.

“Crypt TV has proven expertise in creating a world of scare. Their stories resonate with the youth all over, including a loyal fan base in India,” he said. “We hope to add a strong local and cultural context to Crypt’s stories in India, create bilateral access to talent and open up the vast Indian market for our stories.”

Since its series A round in February 2018, Crypt has focused on India to develop a fanbase and has had already got several of its original monster IPs go viral in the country.

“Crypt is ecstatic to partner with Abundantia to bring our signature genre brand to India,” said Davis, CEO at Crypt TV. “We strongly believe India is a focal point for the future of media and young consumers there are very engaged on digital platforms. We have big future plans there, and I am so excited to begin our move into the region with Vikram.”

Crypt’s shared universe of original characters has over a billion views and a community of over 13 million fans across its network. Crypt’s monsters include The Birch, The Look-See, and Sunny Family Cult.

According to Malhotra, work is already underway to create IP under this alliance. It’s going to be a mix of Crypt IP and fresh IP created in India. “We have some sharp minds already at work on creating feature film and long-form content. The idea is to leverage story development and production skills from both companies,” Malhotra said.

Crypt TV also makes original content directly for top studios including Fox, WB and Netflix.

In January, Abundantia had announced launch of ‘Psych’, a new content vertical focused on creating IP in the horror and paranormal genre.
