Airport parking: Sky high parking costs hit family holidays

Even standard parking can set you back a small fortune with Luton the dearest at £255 for two weeks, up £64 on last year.

Luton was followed by Gatwick South at £175, London City Airport at £163 and Heathrow at £157, according to new research from car insurer Admiral, which looked at 30 different airports around the country.

Charges vary massively, with Belfast International charging £63, and Bournemouth, Norwich, Glasgow Prestwick and Humberside all £75 or less.

Even holidaymakers who get a lift to the airport to save on costs are at the mercy of the regional postcode lottery as airports slap on punitive drop-off costs for using their drop-off zones.

London Stansted charges a shocking £8.50 for just 15 minutes, equivalent to 57p a minute, with Luton and East Midlands also pricey.

Admiral head of travel Cosmin Sarbu said airport parking can add hundreds of pounds to the cost of your holiday so do your research and book in advance to get the best possible price.

He said: “Compare options online using exact dates and times to get an accurate price.

Think about your needs.

He continued: “Do you need to be right outside the terminal, or can you manage a short walk or even a bus ride?”
