Al Franken, longtime track meet promoter, dead at 96 – Press-Enterprise

Al Franken, the longtime Southern California track meet promoter, died Wednesday at his Los Angeles home. He was 96. Franken was recently diagnosed with leukemia, his son Don said.

For parts of four decades, Franken was one of the most influential promoters in the sport, putting on the Sunkist indoor and Pepsi outdoor meets in Los Angeles and the Jack In The Box indoor meet in San Diego. Franken’s meets produced more than 100 world and American records.
