The Algarve has emerged as the best-value holiday resort destination in the eurozone, according to the annual Post Office Travel Money holiday costs barometer.
Travellers heading to the Portuguese region this Easter can expect to pay less than half the price for a basket of seven holiday essentials than they would in Sorrento in the Italian Riviera.
The Post Office basket tots up items including the cost of an evening meal for two with wine, lunch and a cup of coffee. Prices in the Algarve have fallen by over 16 per cent year-on-year, with the basket costing just under £58, compared to £143 in Sorrento.
While sterling is currently stronger year-on-year against the euro and other European currencies, the Post Office said the main factor behind price falls was competitive pricing in restaurants, bars and shops.
“The price falls could be an indication that tourist businesses in European resorts are keen to attract UK visitors and will keep costs low to do so,” said Nick Boden, head of Post Office Travel Money.
