All in All, It’s Just the Height of the Wall

Used to, as we are, associating walls as structures to keep hostile forces out, the fact that they can keep entities in is usually forgotten. This applies as much to the Ming dynasty Great Wall to the Trump dynasty no wall — simultaneously keeping the ‘barbarians’ out while keeping the citizenry penned in.

But there is also the awkward matter of walls not doing their job simply because the height of a particular wall is not tall enough. This is what happened at the Thiruvananthapuram Zoo last week when a hog deer — the endangered Axis porcinus — ‘escaped’ from its enclosure and vaulted over a perimeter wall.

The escaped deer was found wandering in a deserted plot of land nearby and later tranquilised and returned to the zoo. After investigations, it was found that the perimeter wall was to blame — it was too low.

Awall that is not tall enough is like a ladder without steps —pointless. Investigators also found that this was the secondtime in quick succession that the zoo has had a zoo break.

Aspotted deer had escaped — yup, by jumping over the perimeter wall. Zoo policymakers have, after much discussion, decided that to make things right, the wall must be raised. What that means for the animal revolution brewing inside Thiruvananthapuram Zoo will be closely watched — by those outside its wall.
