Amazon considering relocating its Seattle employees outside the city

Amazon is offering Seattle-based employees additional choices of smaller offices outside the city.

In a message to employees Thursday, Amazon asked which communities near Seattle they’d prefer, including Tacoma (an hour’s drive from Seattle) and nearby Redmond (15 minute drive).

The question was prefaced by an introductory message that said: “GREF (Global real estate and facilities) is always exploring real estate options to support our diverse and growing population, and is considering new locations in the Puget Sound region (in addition to Seattle and Bellevue).”

Connections, the mechanism used to ask the question, is used by Amazon to gather employee feedback.

Amazon, which reported a total global workforce of almost 877,000 as of June 30, has close to 8,000 open jobs across the Puget Sound region in Washington state.

Seattle’s City Council recently passed a tax measure where businesses with at least $7 million in annual payroll expenses will be taxed 0.7% to 2.4% on the amount they pay Seattle-based employees, to be implemented in 2021.

Amazon declined to comment when asked whether the tax played a part in the considerations.

The company reportedly has about 50,000 employees in Seattle, and in February announced its plans to create more than 15,000 in Bellevue.

In 2019, Amazon announced the development of its first owned tower in Bellevue.
