Amazon is under pressure from shareholders to step up its efforts to tackle hate speech and the sale of racist and other offensive products through its website.

The online shopping giant, headed by the world’s richest man Jeff Bezos, is being pushed to overhaul the way it deals with potential scandals amid a growing backlash against major US tech firms.

Amazon’s annual meeting will be held in the US on May 22 and shareholders will for the first time be able to vote on resolutions aimed at tackling concerns related to transparency, diversity and objectionable content.

There are resolutions calling for the firm to produce reports on how it plans to deal with hate speech, the sale of distasteful products, sexual harassment, climate change and the impact on human rights of its facial recognition software.

Influential shareholder advisory body Glass Lewis has urged investors to back some of the resolutions, arguing that they would benefit investors as well as the company.

Bezos may face a vote against his re-election as chairman because he is also chief executive. Corporate governance bodies argue they should be separate roles.

Amazon pointed out that it operates within its code of conduct.

It added that it has a range of environmental initiatives including making half of customer shipments net zero carbon by 2030.
