Online retailing giant Amazon has said it is raising its minimum wage to $15 an hour for all its US employees.

The increase will apply from 1 November to all US staff, full and part-time, as well as temporary and seasonal.

The company also said it would press for a change to the minimum wage level.

Amazon’s Jay Carney said: “We will be working to gain Congressional support for an increase in the federal minimum wage. The current rate of $7.25 was set nearly a decade ago.”

The company said more than 250,000 Amazon employees, as well as more than 100,000 seasonal holiday employees, and their families, would benefit from the new, higher pay rate.
