Amid the dozens of announcements made during its 2019 Worldwide Developers Conference keynote last week, Apple quietly laid the groundwork for a pair of smart glasses, which have been rumored for years and are expected to finally be released sometime in 2020.

Augmented reality, or AR, lets you see and manipulate virtual elements in the real world; this technology is expected to be the centerpiece of Apple’s rumored smart glasses. And toward the end of its two-hour keynote last week, Apple announced a handful of developer tools designed for building augmented-reality experiences.
