As students stream into campuses, many streaming music and TV providers have special discounts aimed at helping students apply themselves outside the classroom.
SiriusXM is just the latest to offer lower-cost subscriptions to students with a $4 monthly fee, compared to $12.99 for other subscribers.
But many of its music competitors – and some video streaming services – also offer student discounts. Of course, some providers have family plans allowing students to watch wherever they are.
Here’s a few providers that give students discounts.
•Amazon Prime: The e-tailing and streaming giant has a Prime Student tier that gives you a free six-month trial with unlimited streaming of thousands of Prime movies and TV shows, tens of millions of songs, as well as free two-day shipping and unlimited photo storage. After the trial, Prime Student costs $6.49 each month or $59 annually.

•Apple Music: Students can get the 50-million song service for $4.99 monthly, compared to the $9.99 standard price. That lets you steam ad-free music and offload music to listen to when you are not online. (The Apple Music family plan, $14.99 monthly, lets up to six people have their own account).
•CBS All Access. Available for students is a 50% break on the limited commercial option, which usually runs $5.99 monthly. CBS All Access brings you local CBS broadcasts in most of the U.S., which includes live college sports. Also available on-demand: current shows such as “Big Brother,” online-only series such as “Star Trek: Discovery” and Patrick Stewart’s upcoming return in “Star Trek: Picard,” and classic series such as “Cheers” and the original “Star Trek.”
•FuboTV: The service, which has more than 100 live channels including CBS, Fox and NBC across much of the U.S., has a family plan that college roommates could consider. Starting at $59.99 monthly, subscribers could see 106 channels – including the recently launched fubo Sports Network – get a 500-hour cloud DVR and watch on three simultaneous screens.
•Spotify and Hulu: Music streaming service Spotify’s student discount plan ($4.99 monthly) includes not only its multimillion-song service, but also video streamer Hulu’s ad-supported on-demand video offering (normally $5.99) with thousands of shows including “The Handmaid’s Tale” and movies such as “Ocean’s 8.” Oh, and students get Showtime (normally $10.99), as well.
•YouTube Music Premium: gives students a three-month free trial and charges only $4.99 monthly afterwards (regularly $9.99), for ad-free, live and off-line listening and watching of music videos.
•Tidal. The music service, owned in part by Jay Z, currently has a special limited-time offer for students, letting them get four months of the service for 99 cents (premium sound) or $1.99 (HiFi sound, equivalent to CD or better). After that, the student rate is regularly 50% off the standard price: $4.99 (premium) or $9.99 (HiFi). In addition to 60 million-plus songs, the service has more than 250,000 music videos.
Some other services with live TV channels let more than one person watch different programs at the same time. Sling TV subscribers to Sling Blue and Orange ($25 for the first month, then $40 monthly) can stream on four devices. YouTube TV ($49.99 monthly), lets you watch on three different devices, while PlayStation Vue, which starts at $49.99 monthly, allow five simultaneous streams, so students could share an account (remember you can cancel these services at any time).
And Philo ($20 monthly), which has more than 50 channels including A&E, AMC, Food Network, Discovery Channel, HGTV, OWN and Sundance Channel, lets you stream on three devices at the same time (and get a subscription without a credit card).
Interestingly, Philo arose out of a company that replaced standard cable TV packages on campuses with wireless TV – viewable on mobile devices and computers – still available free on many campuses as part of students’ room and board.
