Assam: Explosion in Kamakhya-Dekargaon Intercity Express


GUWAHATI: Three people were injured in a blast in a passenger train at Harisinga station in Assam. The explosion occurred in a coach of the Kamakhya-Dekargaon Intercity Express at the Harisinga railway station around 7.04 pm, a Northeast Frontier Railway spokesperson said.

Pallab Bhattacharyya Director General of police (Civil defence/home guards/in charge of Special Branch) told ET, “Before reaching the Harisinga there was a sound generally which happens in case of low intensity improvise explosive device (IED) explosion.”

He said that senior police officers have rushed to the site and at this moment it is difficult to say what led to the blast. It may some technical glitch. A railway official told ET, “Train is presently being detained. We are examining if the blast was due to short circuit or something else.”

There persons were injured, one of them critically, and rushed to a hospital. Railway and police officials have rushed to the site — around 95 km from Guwahati, the sources said.

Investigations are on and it was yet to be ascertained whether the explosion was caused by a grenade or an improvised explosive device (IED), the sources added.
