BDO set to become fifth largest accountancy firm as it eyes tie-up with smaller rival Moore Stephens

A challenger could soon be breathing down the neck of the Big Four accounting firms as BDO nears a merger with a smaller rival.

Talks with Moore Stephens are said to be at an advanced stage. 

Together, they would overtake Grant Thornton as the UK’s fifth largest auditor after Deloitte, PwC, EY and KPMG.

The move would increase BDO’s UK workforce by a quarter, to about 5,000. BDO and Moore Stephens combined their South African operations in 2010.
