Chinese researchers analysed data on 36,051 people aged 40 and over.

They were measured and weighed at the start of the trial and reported their weights when they were ten years younger and aged 25.

The volunteers were tracked for 12 years, during which time 10,500 died.

The increased risk of dying young among those who became obese between 25 and 47 was 22 per cent from any cause and 49 per cent from heart disease.

Even those who lost weight between middle and old age were 30 per cent more likely to die early from any cause.

But being obese throughout adulthood was most dangerous, with a 72 per cent higher risk of dying, the team at Huazhong University of Science and Technology found.

It said: “Stable obesity across adulthood, weight gain from young to middle adulthood, and weight loss from middle to late adulthood were associated with increased risks of mortality.”
