A hangover is the name to a group of symptoms that are caused by a night of heavy drinking.

Drinking more alcohol than your body can handle can lead to splitting headaches, sickness and dizziness.

There aren’t any outright cures for a hangover, warned the NHS.

But, adding ginger to your diet may help to reduce some of the symptoms, it’s been claimed.

Ginger could help to settle your stomach after drinking too much alcohol, claimed physician Dr Joseph Mercola.

It may help you to avoid feeling sick or nauseous the next day, he said.

The best way to add ginger to your diet is to steep fresh ginger in some tea, although you can also take ginger in supplement form.

“If you find yourself feeling hungover after too many drinks, don’t try the ‘hair of the dog’ remedy of drinking more alcohol – this will only prolong your reaction,” he said.

“There are some natural remedies that may help you to avoid hangover symptoms altogether.

“If you’re feeling nauseated, steep a piece of fresh ginger root in hot water for a natural stomach-settling tea.”

Adding more ginger to your diet could also help to reduce muscle pain and soreness, nutritionists have claimed.

Alternatively, if you’re not a huge fan of ginger, try drinking a cup of black coffee, said Mercola.

The coffee may help to reduce the swelling in your blood vessels, and relieve headaches.

But, the best way to prevent a hangover is to avoid drinking so much in the first place, said the NHS.

You also shouldn’t drink on an empty stomach. Have a meal that includes carbohydrates or fats before hitting the town.

Be sure to drink plenty of water when you wake up, added the NHS.

“Dealing with a hangover involves rehydrating the body to help it deal with the painful symptoms.

“The best time to rehydrate is before going to sleep after a drinking session.”

If you have a headaches or muscle cramps the morning after your drinking session, take painkillers to relieve some of the symptoms.

Sugary foods could also help you to feel less trembly. But, an antacid may be needed to settle your stomach first.
