Black Friday 2018: Shoppers 'to spend £8.29BN' – but how many REGRET last year purchases?

This weekend will mark one of the biggest sales dates in the shopping calendar, with the high street set to be rammed with shoppers set on nabbing a bargain.

From Christmas gifts to flight tickets, the deals are seemingly endless with more and more retailers jumping on the bargain bandwagon.

New research from VoucherCodes.co.uk and the Centre for Retail Research (CRR) reveals shoppers are predicted to splash a whopping £13.41 million per minute over the Cyber Weekend this year.

This amounts to an incredible £8.29 billion in online and offline sales from Black Friday on 23 November, through to Cyber Monday on 26 November – a staggering 6 percent increase on the £7.78 billion spent in 2017.

Black Friday is expected to see shoppers part with £2.44 billion of their hard-earned cash, the research shows.

As sales hot up over the weekend, reaching fever pitch on Cyber Monday, Brits are predicted to splurge almost £2.96 billion on last-minute bargains at the end of the savings weekend.

Jimmy New, Director of Marketing at VoucherCodes.co.uk said: “Almost a quarter of Christmas sales are made over the Cyber Weekend and despite the name, the figures suggest that some Brits are still hitting the high street to snap up the best deals.

“With more retailers than ever launching flash sales over the long weekend, as well as great deals in the week leading up to it, the opportunity is there for Brits to bag a bargain and make their hard-earned cash stretch even further.”

But despite more people planning to take part in the sales this year, other research shows one in five adults admit to regretting purchases they made in last year’s sales.

Finder.com research revealed 21 percent of shoppers from last year regretted buying something during the Cyber Weekend, spending an estimated average of £83 on an item they wish they had not.

The data also showed male shoppers are planning to spend more than woman – eyeing up a total of £234 on average.

This is despite the fact a quarter of males regret purchases they made last year, compared to 18 percent of women.

Londoners planned to spend around £533 last year, which was £234 more than the national average in the 2017 sales.

This year Londoners are planning to spend almost half that, averaging at £279.

A total of 62 percent of adults plan on hitting the sales this year, compared to 36 percent in 2017, the research showed.

Jon Ostler, CEO at finder.com, said: “There are some brilliant bargains to be found in the Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales, but as so many people regret purchases they made last year it’s possible some are caught up in the impulse spending hype.

“Our data shows that planned spending has dropped by a third, but that doesn’t take into account unplanned spending.

“To avoid post-Black Friday regret, it’s worth planning ahead.

“Make lists of the products you’re most keen to bag a bargain with, work out how much you can afford to spend and shop around.”
