The British rescue diver Elon Musk dubbed ‘pedo guy’ has refused to apologise to the billionaire.

Vernon Unsworth is currently locked in a defamation battle against the SpaceX and Tesla founder.

During the court case, Elon said sorry and insisted the baseless slur was not meant to be an allegation, but a jibe. He said ‘pedo’ was a common insult in South Africa, the country where he grew up.

Elon attacked Unsworth on Twitter after the diver refused his offer of a submarine to help rescue 12 Thai kids stuck in a flooded cave.

Unsworth who said the gesture was a ‘PR stunt’ and that Musk should ‘stick his submarine where it hurts’.

In Los Angeles central court yesterday, Elon’s lawyer said: “Do you believe Mr Musk is so cold-hearted that he was sending over this sub with no regard for the children’s lives?’

‘Are you willing to apologize to Mr Musk for saying that it was just a PR stunt?’

‘Unsworth replied: ‘My insult was to the tube and not to Mr Musk personally.

‘I’m not sure how I need to apologize. It was my opinion at the time and I stand by that opinion.’

After Unsworth knocked back Elon’s offer of a submarine, the billionaire wrote a tweet questioning the diver’ role in the rescue and then a second which said: ‘Sorry pedo guy, you really did ask for it.’

The third tweet was written in response to a question from a follower.

‘Bet ya a signed dollar it’s true,’ Elon wrote.

Unsworth, 64, said the tweets damaged his reputation and left him ‘humiliated, ashamed, dirtied’.

His estranged wife was brought into court and said any allegations of paedophilia were ‘totally false’.

In court earlier this week, Musk said his tweet was written after ‘an unprovoked attack on what was a good-natured attempt to help the kids’.

‘It was wrong and insulting, and so I insulted him back,’ Musk said.

‘I thought he was just some random creepy guy’ who was ‘unrelated to the rescue’, he continued.

Musk then said he did not mean for the tweet to be taken literally.

‘I assume he did not mean to sodomize me with a submarine … Just as I didn’t literally mean he was a paedophile,” he said.

“I apologised in a tweet and again in the (pretrial) deposition, and I’ll say it again – I apologize to Mr. Unsworth.’

‘People say a lot of things on Twitter that aren’t true,’ Musk added.
