Brockton man wanted for delivery robbery, bat assault arrested

Police charged a 22-year-old city man with robbing a pizza delivery driver and assaulting a homeless man with a bat.

BROCKTON — A 22-year-old city man, who was wanted by police for a robbery of a pizza delivery driver and an assault on a homeless man with a metal bat, was arrested Wednesday night.

Jamoni Nelson, of 15 Belair St., was arrested by Brockton police, about 5:15 p.m., after they responded to a report of a man with a gun. He was charged with assault with intent to murder, armed robbery, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and threatening to commit a crime. He also had three warrants.

“Police arrested Jamoni Nelson (Wednesday) after receiving a tip on his whereabouts,” said police spokesman Darren Duarte. “Emergency dispatch received a call just after 5 p.m. that Nelson pulled a gun on a man and rode away on a red bicycle heading westbound on Spring Street.”

A witness told police that the suspect dropped his bicycle in the area of 23 Warren Ave. Officers responded to the area and police say they found Nelson inside the Brockton Mini Mart, at 139 Pleasant St.

Police told The Enterprise last Thursday that they were searching for Nelson related to an unarmed robbery of a 54-year-old woman, who was delivering for Stella’s Pizza. The incident occurred at 18 Arlington St.

The woman told police she was approached by two men. When one of the men tried to steal her cell phone, the woman screamed, which is when the suspect punched her in the face and head, she told police.

The driver gave the suspects $30 in cash and they tried to steal her phone again, she told police.

The woman told police she kicked the suspect and floored the vehicle, returning to Stella’s to report the incident to police.

Police say they were able to identify one suspect, Nelson, through his cell phone number and Registry of Motor Vehicle records.

Police initially issued a summons for Nelson to face an unarmed robbery charge at a later date in Brockton District Court, but asked for the public’s help in locating him last week.

“The same suspect is being charged with a similar crime that happened Tuesday morning just after midnight,” Duarte said.

Police say Nelson is the suspect in a metal bat assault early Tuesday morning outside the Keys of the Kingdom church on North Main Street. A 21-year-old homeless man told police that, following an argument with two men, he was hit in the head with the bat. The man was hospitalized.

“The victim of the baseball bat incident is the same victim who told investigators Nelson pulled a gun on him (Wednesday),” Duarte said.

Police did not recover a firearm.

Police also told The Enterprise they don’t believe the Arlington Street delivery robbery is connected to others in the city. There have been a rash of robberies, particularly on the north side, in recent months, including on Boundary Circle, Broad Street, Chatham West Drive, Field Street, Howard Street, Pleasantview Avenue, Sawtell Avenue and Vine Street.

Nelson is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday in Brockton District Court.
