Busy week as police investigate 17 car break-ins, five auto thefts: Shaker Heights Police Blotter – cleveland.com


SHAKER HEIGHTS, Ohio

Theft from auto: North Moreland Boulevard, Larchmere Boulevard, Kemper Road and Fairhill Road

Police investigated 17 cases of parked cars being entered after their windows were smashed on Feb. 9 and 10. On Feb. 12, Cleveland police arrested three boys, ages 16, 16 and 17, in connection with more than 80 car break-ins, which took place in Cleveland Heights, Cleveland and Shaker Heights.

OVI: Chagrin Boulevard

At 11 p.m. Feb. 9, an officer investigated a matter in which a car followed too close behind another and caused an accident. It was learned that the driver of the car that caused the accident, a Cleveland Heights woman, 19, was intoxicated. The woman was found to have a blood-alcohol count of .227, above the state minimum for drunk driving of .08.

Police charged the woman with OVI, having a BAC greater than .17, following too closely and not wearing a seatbelt.

Grand theft: Van Aken Boulevard

At 12:40 p.m. Feb. 9, a man reported that his 2006 Buick was stolen from the apartment parking lot at 16345 Van Aken Blvd. Cleveland police recovered the car on Feb. 12 near the Garfield Heights border. No one was arrested.

Grand theft: North Moreland Boulevard

At 3:15 p.m. Feb. 9, a man reported his car stolen from his apartment complex’s parking lot. The car was recovered in Cleveland after it had been involved in an aggravated robbery and hit-skip incident. The car was unoccupied when it was recovered.

Grand theft: Lee Road

At 10 p.m. Feb. 10, a resident reported that his car had been stolen after he left its engine running while he was stopped at the Sunoco gas station at 3569 Lee Road. Three juveniles were arrested for grand theft in Cleveland.

Carrying a concealed weapon: Scottsdale Boulevard

At 8:35 p.m. Feb. 11, an officer conducted a traffic stop of a car that did not obey a stop sign. The driver, a Broadview Heights man, 24, was cited for the traffic offense.

A passenger in the car, a Cleveland man, 25, was found to be in possession of a firearm. He did not have a permit to carry a gun. Police charged the passenger with carrying a concealed weapon — a felony — and obstructing official business. Marijuana was also confiscated from the auto.

Grand theft: Chagrin Boulevard

At 2:05 a.m. Feb. 11, a car belonging to a woman from Texas was stolen from in front of a residence. The woman told police that she still had the Volkswagen’s key, and that her husband, in Texas, had the other key. Police found no broken glass at the scene or any other evidence of a break-in. The car has not been recovered.

Assault: Van Aken Boulevard

At 8:55 p.m. Feb. 11, a Solon man, 27, was arrested after he was involved in an altercation with a Cleveland man, 54, at the Van Aken RTA rapid station. The Solon man, after allegedly arguing with the older man, threw rocks at him, then pushed him while the man was climbing steps. Police charged the Solon man with assault.

OVI: Van Aken Boulevard

At 1:45 a.m. Feb. 12, an officer stopped a car that was being driven too slowly and that was crossing lanes. The driver, a Maple Heights man, 43, was found to be intoxicated. The driver refused to take a breath test. Police charged the man with OVI.

Domestic violence: Rolliston Road

At 4:05 p.m. Feb. 12, police were called to a home where a man, 41, is alleged to have assaulted his former wife, 39. The man went to his former wife’s house after he learned that the family’s dog was missing. He then found out that the dog wasn’t missing and that his daughter had played a prank.

The man was upset, and allegedly assaulted his former wife and fought with her current boyfriend. Police charged the man with assault and domestic violence.

Grand theft: Larchmere Boulevard

At 11:50 p.m. Feb. 7, it was reported that someone had stolen a man’s car while it was parked in a restaurant lot. The man, 64, of Chardon, had left his key in the car, although the engine was not running. The car was later recovered in Cleveland.
