Chhattisgarh extends leases of 4 NMDC mines

KOLKATA: The Chhattisgarh government has extended the lease of four mines of state-owned mining major NMDC Limited that were due for extension in March 2020 by a period of 20 years, an official statement from NMDC said on Tuesday.

The mines are located in Bailadila region which contains some of the best quality iron ore in the country. The move will boost NMDC’s prospects as it removes all uncertainty about extension of its mining leases in Bailadila beyond March 2020.

“Of the five mines in Bailadila Sector, lease of four mines with an installed capacity of over 29 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) has been extended now, while one mining lease had already been extended in 2017,” the NMDC statement added.

The Mineral Resources Department, Government of Chhattisgarh in its letter dated December 17, 2019 extended the four mining leases in Bailadila, District : South Bastar, Dantewada, Chhattisgarh pertaining to NMDC for a further period of 20 years.

“The leases of Bailadila Deposit No.5, Bailadila Deposit No.10, Bailadila Deposit No.14 and Bailadila Deposit No.14 have been extended for the period of 20 years i.e. upto September 2035,” the statement added.

Of NMDC’s 33 mtpa production, Chhattisgarh’s two complexes in Bacheli and Kirandul under Bailadila projects contributed about 24 mtpa in 2018-19.
