China says latest round of US trade talks were ‘extensive, deep’

China has said trade talks held this week with the US were extensive and deep, with the two sides vowing to maintain close contact.

The Chinese ministry of commerce said in a statement on Thursday that “extensive, deep and meticulous discussions promoted mutual understanding to establish a foundation to solve each side’s concerns”.

China and the US held three days of talks in Beijing which concluded on Wednesday, laying the groundwork for higher-level negotiations between now and the March 2 deadline.

That deadline was set during a meeting between President Donald Trump and President Xi Jinping in Argentina in December, with the commerce ministry making a nod towards the “common understanding” between the two leaders.

The Office of the United States Trade Representative said on Wednesday that the talks focused on “China’s pledge to purchase a substantial amount of agricultural, energy, manufactured goods, and other products and services from the United States”.
