Claire’s recalls JoJo Siwa’s makeup kit for tweens after finding asbestos in it

Tween superstar JoJo Siwa and Claire’s accessory and cosmetic stores are two sparkly creations made for each other.

Now the U.S. Food and Drug Administration says her makeup kit sold there is dangerous: It tested positive for asbestos. The store has recalled the product after the FDA issued a warning to stop using the product immediately.

Claire’s JoJo Siwa Makeup Set (Batch/Lot No. S180109), which contains eyeshadow, two lip glosses and nail polish, is geared toward young girls and teens. Siwa, 16, first appeared on “Dance Moms” and has since become a breakout star with her own YouTube channel with 9.8 million subscribers, products and appearances everywhere.

The FDA announcement comes three months after other Claire’s products were pulled from the shelves because they also contained asbestos.

Siwa has yet to make any kind of statement on social media.

Also testing positive for asbestos was a product from Beauty Plus called Global Contour Effects Palette 2/No. S1603002/PD-C1179. It’s unclear where this cosmetic was sold; USA TODAY has reached out to Beauty Plus for details.

Both recalls were made by the companies before they were announced by the FDA last week.

Claire’s says products safe

USA TODAY contacted Claire’s on Sunday seeking comment on the recall. The company’s website says the Siwa makeup kit is no longer available in stores.

“Claire’s stands behind the safety of this item and all other Claire’s cosmetic items, as such small trace amounts are considered acceptable under European and Canadian cosmetic safety regulations,” the company told Today by email. “In addition, last year Claire’s moved to talc-free cosmetic manufacturing to prevent any further concerns about talc contamination. Claire’s also supports increased FDA oversight of personal care products. We will provide a full refund to any customers who purchased the product.”

History of recalls

In March, the FDA announced that three products from Claire’s and one from Justice were found to contain asbestos.

Claire’s initially refused the agency’s request to recall those products, saying the test results showed “significant errors.” But the company relented “out of an abundance of caution.”

“Specifically, the FDA test reports have mischaracterized fibers in the products as asbestos, in direct contradiction to established EPA and USP criterion for classifying asbestos fibers,” the company said.
