Cleaner engines come closer as £50m innovation centre opens in Coventry

The Centre for Advanced Low-Carbon Propulsion Systems (C-ALPS), a collaboration between Coventry University and global engineering specialist FEV Group, is combining academic and commercial expertise to produce next-generation electric, hybrid and petrol/diesel engines. The 30,000 sq ft space houses some of the most advanced test bed facilities currently available in the UK. The capabilities will be available to car makers, airplane manufacturers, small and medium-sized companies in the supply chain and technology partners keen to accelerate the creation of new powertrain solutions for use across automotive, aerospace, marine and rail sectors.

Some 36 new jobs will be created initially, with a number of apprentices and graduates from Coventry University already appointed.

“This collaboration is very encouraging news for the UK automotive industry,” said  Professor Richard Dashwood, Coventry University deputy vice-chancellor.

“We now have a real opportunity to lead the rest of the world when it comes to developing low carbon powertrain systems.

“It’s all about bringing the best of both worlds together, using the expertise and track record of FEV Group in engineering consultancy and teaming it with the academic knowledge of our professors to create a real centre of excellence that can attract funding, build capacity in the supply chain and, importantly, offer commercial testing services to car makers.

“Automotive is naturally the first target, but the technology will also be available to support the evolution of other sectors.”

The location, in the heart of the Midlands automotive industry, was a major attraction says FEV UK, which sees its investment creating world class test bed facilities and an invaluable resource as the sector moves towards new cleaner modes of transport.
