Coach follows Burberry, Versace, Gucci and Hugo Boss, pledging to go fur-free

Fur continues to fall out of fashion, with Coach becoming the latest high-end label to say that it will no longer include it in its merchandise.

The brand, known for its signature bags, gloves and bags, says it plans to be fur-free by the time it unveils its Fall 2019 collection.

“The decision to go fur-free is a truly meaningful milestone for the brand,” Joshua Schulman, president and CEO of Coach said in a statement, noting that the move was in line with corporate responsibility markers Coach established three years ago.

Haute labels and designers have increasingly shed fur in recent months, following years of criticism of how animals are treated to obtain the material.

Burberry, the high-end British line known for its chic rain coats and boots, said last month that it would no longer use real fur. And in March, famed label Versace said it was implementing a similar policy, echoing moves by such other designers such as Hugo Boss and Gucci.

Other fabrics have come under fire. In June, low-priced clothing chain Forever 21 said it would ban mohair from its scarves, sweaters and other products by 2020 amid concerns about animal rights. Fast-fashion giants H&M and Zara also said they would no longer sell items containing the yarn within two years.

People For The Ethical Treatment of Animals applauded Coach’s move but added that it needs to do more.

“Today’s shoppers don’t want to wear the fur of tormented animals,” PETA executive vice president Tracy Reiman said in a statement, “and PETA looks forward to Coach pulling angora and mohair from its designs next.”
