Coming soon: Top upcoming electric cars under ₹15 lakh | Representative images
Now that India has started its tryst with electric vehicles, i.e. started to open up to the idea of using this newer category of vehicles in India, more and more companies are racing to introduce their EV offerings in the country. As far as electric cars are concerned, we have seen offerings across the entire spectrum — we have Tata EVs as well as those from luxury carmakers. However, this is only the beginning and we can expect to see plenty of other additions to India’s EV market. To keep you updated about that, we put together this quick list of upcoming electric vehicles in India that we expect to be launched some time within the next one year.
Upcoming electric cars under ₹15 lakh
As Tata Motors continues to expand its portfolio of electric cars in India, electrified iteration of the Tiago hatchback is expected to be one of the next EV models the company will launch in the near future. It will look pretty much the same as the standard Tiago save for a handful of EV-specific changes such as the badging, graphics, different grille, and a charging port of course. Tata Tiago EV will make use of the company’s Ziptron technology that it now uses for personal EVs. Our guess is that the Tata Tiago EV’s price when it is launched in India will be in the vicinity of ₹6.5 lakh.
It is no secret that Tata Motors has been working on an all-electric iteration of the Altroz hatchback as well. However, the company has yet not revealed the upcoming EV’s specifications. Nonetheless, we can be certain that Tata Altroz EV too will get the company’s Ziptron powertrain. The company has previously said it is aiming for a driving range of 250 km to 300 km with this upcoming EV’s battery pack. We believe Tata Altroz EV’s price will range between ₹10.5 lakh to ₹12.5 lakh.
Remember Auto Expo 2020? Mahindra eKUV100’s price in India was actually revealed then though the company said it woiuld launch the electric SUV later on. At the time, Mahindra & Mahindra had said the eKUV100’s price will start from ₹8.25 lakh (ex-showroom), which is inclusive of at least the FAME II subsidies. As for this upcoming electric SUV’s mechanicals — Mahindra e KUV100 will get a lithium-ion battery pack and an electric motor which generates 54 bhp and 120 Nm of peak torque. Mahindra eKUV100 is capable of a driving range of 147 km on a single charge and can be charged up to 80 per cent in an hour.
The other Mahindra EV we expect to see within the next year is the Mahindra eXUV300, which too was showcased during Auto Expo 2020. Underpinned by the Mahindra Electric Scalable and Modular Architecture (MESMA) platform, the eXUV300 electric SUV is expected to be offered with two battery options; the model with the smaller battery will likely offer a driving range of about 300 km per charge, whereas the Mahindra eXUV300 long range model could offer a driving range of about 400 km per charge. We believe Mahindra eXUV300 electric SUV’s prices in India will start at around ₹12.5 lakh.
