Conservative Facebook employees are complaining about its liberal culture

A group of disgruntled Facebook employees have taken issue with the company’s left-leaning political culture.

Led by senior engineer Brian Amerige, a number of Facebook employees have created an online group called ‘FB’ers for Political Diversity’.

Amerige wrote a post in the group – shared on Facebook’s internal message board – with the headline ‘We have a problem with political diversity’.

The post was seen by the New York Times and in it Amerige derides the social media company as a ‘political monoculture that’s intolerant of different views’.

‘We claim to welcome all perspectives, but are quick to attack — often in mobs — anyone who presents a view that appears to be in opposition to left-leaning ideology,’ he wrote.

There are roughly 25,000 employees inside Facebook but apparently only around 100 have joined the group.

Still, the creation of the group is already causing a backlash. Another engineer told the Times that other employees have complained to their managers about it.

Facebook has been grappling with politicization for years now. There was some criticism a few years ago that its Trending News section had a liberal bias. And at the same time it’s trying to stamp out far-right speech on its platform.

When Facebook’s boss Mark Zuckerberg appeared in front of congress earlier this year, he was asked point blank about anti-conservative ideas on his site.

The billionaire responded that he wanted Facebook to be ‘a platform for all ideas.’
