Contemporary ballet and operatic excellence come to Chico

Chic Performances presents big shows this month.

The first of them is the sold-out installation of the San Francisco Cinema Opera series, “Show Boat” on Oct.14 at 6:30 p.m. in Zingg Recital Hall. This American opera classic tells the story of a couple falling in love and depicts racism in New Orleans. In today’s racially charged climates, “Show” Boat is still a relevant story. It is full of grand costumes, fun songs and great performances.

Another show taking place this month is “Complexions Contemporary Ballet.” The dance group has made appearances in some of the world’s most prestigious venues and on television’s popular series “So You Think You Can Dance.” They’ll come to Laxson Auditorium for a one-night performance of their style of new-wave ballet, varying from classical ballet to contemporary hip-hop. The performance will consist of excerpts from their David Bowie tribute “Star Dust,” as well as their critically-acclaimed original material.

The performance will be Oct. 19 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets will be $42 premium, $35 adult, $33 senior, $25 youth and $15 Chico State student. Tickets can be purchased online at chicoperformances.com, or by calling the University Box Office, 898-6333.
