Coronavirus scam warning as Britons sent text saying they've been FINED for going outside


The fake fines are being sent by fradsters telling Britons they have to pay a penalty for breaking lockdown restrictions. A new consumer watchdog report issued the warning, advising caution to Britons, who are on lockdown due to coronavirus.

The Chartered Trading Standards Institute reported that it has witnessed a surge in scams related to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.

It said that, from doorstep to email and text scams, there appears to be no end to the depths that opportunists are sinking to during the crisis.

A new scam text purporting to be from the government informs the recipient that they have been issued a fine for leaving the house during the lockdown.

The message claims that the movements of the recipient are monitored through their phone, and must pay a fine.

“This latest text scam issues a fake fine which tells the recipient to pay a fine or face more severe action.

“Anyone who receives this text should ignore it. It is simply another ruse to steal the payment details of users.

“In all of these cases, do not click, or tap any links that these messages ask you to.”

Adam French, Which? Consumer Rights Expert, said: “Impersonating legitimate organisations or government officials is a common tactic scammers use to reel in victims, and worryingly the coronavirus outbreak has created the perfect breeding ground for these types of scams.

“The best way for consumers to protect themselves is to remain vigilant and take extra precautions before clicking on any unsolicited emails, texts or answering calls.

“Make sure your computers, mobile phones and tablets are supported by the latest security updates, and consider installing antivirus software to minimise threats.”
