Cozy Creation - 5 Tips for Crafting the Perfect Reading Nook

Everyone needs somewhere in their home they can retreat to for peace and quiet. For the avid reader in your household, that might be a reading nook tucked away from the chaos and noise of the rest of the house.

If you haven’t yet created a book nook and need a helping hand, the tips below should give you the inspiration you’re seeking:

Enliven Your Senses

A reading nook, of course, has to have books. However, another non-negotiable feature is a sense of welcoming comfort. You can achieve this with the addition of certain scents. Invest in an aromatherapy diffuser and pair it with your favorite essential oils, or even buy candles that evoke a sense of tranquillity.

The more relaxed and comfortable you feel, the more memorable and rewarding your reading experience will be.

Purchase Reading Lighting

Standard house lighting is not designed for reading. Sure, house lighting illuminates a room, but does it provide an eye strain-free, book shadow-free reading experience? That’s unlikely to be the case.

Once you’ve got your books set up in your new reading area, invest in a form of reading lighting that suits the space. It might be a lamp, a different light bulb for your current lighting setup, or more than one lamp. Play around with varying styles of lighting to ensure you find the setup that works for you.

Arrange Furniture for Comfort

Though you may wish to have the most elegant or authentic-looking reading nook, it shouldn’t be at the detriment of comfort. First and foremost, you should have somewhere comfortable to sit and read your book.

It might be a window seat with a comfortable cushion or a rug on the floor next to a crackling fire. Some people prefer a cushioned rocking chair, a day bed, or a bean bag. Consider the features that matter the most to you, but ultimately focus on what will make you perfectly comfortable for extended reading sessions.

Don’t Let Your Book Collection Get Out of Control

Most book lovers will tell you that you can never have too many books, especially since the invention of the e-reader. However, there is such a thing as too many books if they will be stored in your reading nook.

Don’t let books pile up around you, making it challenging for you to get comfortable and enjoy your space. Instead, fill your reading area with the books you know you will reach for in the next few years. You can store the rest away in a bookshelf, garage, or attic, and rotate your collection as you finish books and start new ones.

Include a Table

While your primary focus will be on making sure you’ve got a comfortable chair and plenty of books, it’s also worth looking for a table that will complete the look. It’s only when you don’t have one that you realize just how convenient they are.

A table can house your cup of tea, a half-finished book, and even be an additional form of storage for yet more books. Rather than buying one new, you can take the eco-friendly route of picking up a preloved one from a local thrift store or social media marketplace.

When you need somewhere to unwind and escape, a reading room or book nook can be the ideal solution. However, they can take a few finishing touches to become what you want and need. Consider the tips above if there’s an area in your home that you wouldn’t mind turning into a special little literary sanctuary.
