The cyber security industry says a crucial gap in training cyber security professionals will be addressed with the Union Budget proposal to set up a national university for forensic science and cyber forensics in the country.
“(This) should be a good move if it becomes a model for creating a replicable cyber forensics setup. Today each state has its own setup and there are some universities that have build out capabilities, but there is no standardisation,” Pankit Desai, co-founder, Sequretek, a cyber intelligence firm said,
Cybersecurity has been an increasing area of importance for the country, with India being among the top few countries being hit by cyberattacks globally. At present, some states run their own cyber forensic institutes and universities but there is little standardisation across them. There is also a shortage of trained manpower with the required specialised skills.
Prashant Bhat, MD Cybersecurity & Privacy, Protiviti India, said, “Cyber forensics training is the need of the hour as there is a big shortage of professionals in this domain in the country today. A dedicated university will be able to select the right candidates and train them adequately to the expectations of the business. This will also enable organisations do get access to workforce for delivering high quality of work in a short time.”
“With increased cyber attacks, the need for a national capability to identify the perpetrators and supporting law enforcement would be welcome,” said Desai.
Trishneet Arora, chief executive officer, TAC Security, said that many of the announcements would help in bringing about more confidence in the cyber security sector in India. ” With the allocation of Rs. 8000 crore for the National Mission on Quantum Computing and Technology and an indication at the opening of Cyber Forensic University … will help position India against global leaders in the sector. These budget announcements shall boost the Indian players’ morale in the cyber security space, giving boost to the further success of the Make in India and Digital India flagship campaigns of GoI.”
