Dinosaur shock: How dinosaurs roamed while Earth was on the other side of galaxy – video

NASA research scientist Dr Jessie Christiansen stunned her fellow scientists and astronomers when she revealed that our Solar System had been across the galaxy when dinosaurs roamed. Dr Christiansen posted a demonstration video to Twitter with the caption: “I have always been interested in galactic archaeology, but I don’t think this is what they meant. Did you know that dinosaurs lived on the other side of the galaxy?”

In the video, an artist’s impression of Milky Way Galaxy from above can be seen.

The text running alongside it reads: “Did you know that dinosaurs lived on the other side of the galaxy?

“It takes the Sun about 200 million years to orbit the centre of the Galaxy.

“This means that the last time we were here was the start of the Jurassic Period.”

It continues: “The Jurassic Period lasted 55 million years.

“The Cretaceous Period spanned 145-66 million years ago.

“The mid-Cretaceous took place on the other side of the galaxy.

“65 million years ago, the extinction event occurred.”

Dr Christiansen got the idea to illustrate this history when she was leading a stargazing party at California Institute of Technology in Pasadena.

Attendees were astonished when she mentioned that our Solar System had been across the galaxy when dinosaurs roamed.

Dr Christiansen told Business Insider: ”The animation kind of makes it seem like we’ve come back to the same spot, but in reality the whole galaxy has moved a very long way.

“It’s more like we’re doing a spiral through space. As the whole galaxy’s moving and we’re rotating around the centre, it kind of creates this spiral.

“Our solar system doesn’t travel to the centre of the galaxy and then back again. We always stay about this distance away.”
