DWP urges state pension age Britons to check if they qualify for help with living costs

Pension Credit is a means-tested benefit which is intended to help people who have reached state pension age and are on a low income. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), who is responsible for paying this benefit, is urging people to check eligibility.

Alternatively, the DWP tweet directed people to call 0800 99 1234.

Pension Credit is separate from the state pension.

It can be claimed by eligible people, even if they have other income, savings or they own their own home.

It may also be that claiming Pension Credit opens up other forms of support.

The Government website states: “If you get Pension Credit you can also get other help, such as:

  • Housing Benefit if you rent the property you live in
  • Support for Mortgage Interest if you own the property you live in
  • Council Tax Reduction
  • A free TV licence if you’re aged 75 or over
  • Help with NHS dental treatment, glasses and transport costs for hospital appointments
  • Help with your heating costs.”

Furthermore, if a person gets the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit then they will automatically get Cold Weather Payments.

Additionally, it’s possible to use the Pension Credit calculator to work out how much a person might be able to get.

The user of this GOV.UK service will need details of earnings, benefit and pensions, as well as savings and investments.

They will need the same details for their partner, if they have one.

The Government directs people to contact the Pension Service helpline if they’re not sure whether they’re eligible for extra amounts.
