Early Black Friday madness: Will your favorite stores be open on Thanksgiving?

Shoppers hungry for Black Friday bargains may want to hit the stores before feasting on pumpkin pie.

Once again major retailers, including Target, Best Buy, J.C. Penney, Macy’s and Kohl’s are flashing the holiday shopping spirit early with in-store Black Friday specials on Thanksgiving Day.

For the first time, Bed Bath and Beyond will swing open its doors while some families are still carving up the turkey. GameStop will cater to its gamer customers by opening at 3 p.m. Nov. 28 after being closed on Thanksgiving in 2018.

Sticking to tradition, other popular retailers such as Apple, wholesale clubs Costco and Sam’s Club, home improvement stores, office supply store chains Office Depot and Staples will remain closed on the holiday and will begin dangling promotions on Black Friday.

The open-door policy on Thanksgiving Day is fueled by shopping trends. More than half of shoppers – 58% – say they plan to shop on Thanksgiving, up from 45% last year, according to a survey from independent marketing intelligence firm MiQ’s 2019 Holiday Shopping report.

Black Friday 2019: Get a jump on your holiday shopping plans with early look at ads

For years Black Friday has marked the official kickoff to the holiday shopping season and the time of year when shoppers get focused on holiday spending.

That rush of spending gave Black Friday its name, as in the time of year when retailers were “in the black.” For nearly a decade, that official kickoff has been creeping ever closer to Thanksgiving, eating into time people used to spend around the holiday table. By 2012, most major retailers were open on the fourth Thursday in November.

The shift has been accompanied by controversy. Despite public outcry and shoppers’ threats to boycott, stores are still turning on the lights and flashing deals. Opening times have crept earlier, but they haven’t changed much this year. Like last year, J.C. Penney will open at 2 p.m. Thanksgiving with Kohl’s, Macy’s, Target and Best Buy all opening at 5 p.m.

Because of state laws, stores in Maine, Massachusetts and Rhode Island will remain closed Thanksgiving. Store hours and openings may also be affected by county or municipal laws.
