The future of your mobile phone is 5G with the launch of this new technology now in full swing.

5G is bringing much faster speeds to portable devices and also looks set to change the face of home broadband with downloads already exceeding 300Mbps.

At that speed, you’ll be able to beam an HD movie to your smartphone in under two minutes which is considerably faster than current 4G technology.

Although EE and Vodafone have both launched their new service, the past seven days have seen some big announcements from all the main networks and here’s everything that’s new.

THREE MOBILE

Three Mobile recently announced its 5G signal will become available in August.

However, we now know exactly how much it will cost customers wanting to use it.

The mobile network has revealed that its users won’t be forced to pay any extra to use this service and speeds will also stay fully unrestricted.

Three is boasting that new and existing customers will have access to 5G with no speed caps and at no extra cost on all contract, SIM-only and PAYG mobile plans.

“Three is leading the way with 5G, by providing our customers with unlimited data and the fastest speeds,” said Dave Dyson, CEO at Three

“Our customers will be able to enjoy and explore a full 5G experience, at the same cost as 4G.”

Three says that it has more than twice as much 5G spectrum as its closest competitor which, it says, will deliver significantly faster speeds for its customers.

O2

After months of waiting, O2 has finally revealed its plans for 5G.

The UK network has just confirmed that it will switch on these superfast speeds in October with six areas the first to get access to a better connection.

At launch, O2’s 5G service will be live in Belfast, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Leeds, London and Slough.

This will then be followed by more areas throughout 2019 and into next year.

O2 says it intelligence-led rollout strategy has been driven by data and insight that identifies where customers will benefit from 5G the most.

This means users of the network are most likely to see improvements in key locations including train stations, important business areas and entertainment and sports venues including The O2 and Twickenham Stadium.

“5G is going to be a game changer for our country. Whether it’s for people or businesses, the power of this next-generation network is going to unlock a world of possibilities for our economy and society,” said Mark Evans, CEO, Telefónica UK.

VODAFONE

Vodafone switched on its 5G signal last month and it is already expanding its service.

After the original seven launch areas, these 5G speeds are now available in Birkenhead, Bolton, Gatwick, Lancaster, Newbury, Plymouth, Stoke-on-Trent and Wolverhampton.

That’s not the only good news as the network has just announced its 5G roaming is live in 55 towns and cities across four countries – Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK.

Vodafone has also confirmed that customers don’t pay extra to use 5G in other countries with Vodafone’s pay monthly plans.

EE

EE was the first service to launch 5G with its signal going live in May.

Now the network has announced the exclusive UK network availability of the latest OPPO Reno 5G smartphone in Jet Black.

The new colour variant joins the largest line-up of 5G smartphones of any UK network, including the OPPO Reno 5G in Ocean Green, as well as the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G, OnePlus 7 Pro 5G and LG V50 ThinQ with 5G.

SKY MOBILE

If you use Sky Mobile there’s also good news.

The firm says that users will begin getting 5G from November with it launching in six towns and cities.

A wider national rollout is planned to reach 20 towns and cities before the end of 2019, and a total of 50 to go live by the end of 2020.

Sophia Ahmad, Commercial Director of Sky Mobile, said: “We will be the only mobile operator to be able to combine the launch of next generation superfast 5G connectivity with Sky Mobile’s unique features including Roll, Swap and Watch.”
