Sildenafil is a medicine that is sold under the brand name, Viagra. It is a drug that is supposedly used for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in most men. It not only allows them to receive firm erections but according to a study done by the researchers at John Hopkins, Sildenafil also reduces the stimulatory effects of any hormonal stress any individual might have on their heart.
While the drug sildenafil is widely known for the treatment of ED by helping with maintaining a firm erection, recently some researchers concluded that it can also be used as the treatment for pulmonary arterial hypertension. The reason is, sildenafil is considered to have a direct effect on the heart in order to keep the blood flowing properly along with expanding blood vessels.
The human heart experiences a little direct effect of the drug that provides strength to maintain regular heartbeats by chemically inducing the stress rate. This results in a lesser amount of blood flow which then forces the blood to pump more blood into the body.
First Confirmed Research on Effectiveness of Sildenafil on Heart
A study done by David Kass at John Hopkins suggests that if an individual has a larger-than-normal heart then it is a serious medical condition that is considered hypertrophy and can lead to death through heart failure.
Through excessive research, Kass recommends Sildenafil for the treatment of this condition. He says, “Sildenafil works effectively in blocking the chemical stimulation of the heart.” This means the drug is able to block and stop the phosphodiesterase type 5 enzyme. Not only that, but sildenafil also effectively breaks down a significant molecule, the cyclic GMP, which works as a natural stress ‘brake’. In addition, the breakdown also helps and crops the heart to overgrow in size.
This study is believed to be the first research done for humans in effect to sildenafil and its direct impact on the heart. Previous research by Kass and his team at John Hopkins was done at mice that blocked the hormonal stress in the heart for a short period of time.
Other related research by the same group of individuals also shows that sildenafil also helps with chronic high blood pressure by preventing and reversing its long-term effects on the heart.
Moreover, it is considered that sildenafil also helps with controlling the functions of a heart only when it is under stress and is working differently than normal. This shows that the drug sildenafil does have a deep and important impact on heart and can be used efficiently in the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension.
However, just like any other medicine, it does contain some side effects as well. Some common side effects of using sildenafil include:
- Nose bleeding
- Upset stomach
- Shortness of breath
- Nasal congestion
- Muscle achiness, etc.
