Emami Paper to set up Rs 2000 crore packaging board manufacturing unit in Gujarat


KOLKATA: Emami Paper Mills, the paper and packaging board arm of the Emami Group, will invest Rs 2,000 crore to set up a 4,50,000 tonnes per annum greenfield multi-layer coated packaging board manufacturing plant at Bharuch in Gujarat.

Spread over an area of around 103 acres at the Saykha Industrial Area, the proposed project will come up in two phases – having a capacity of 2,25,000 tonnes per annum (tpa) and a 18 megawatt captive power plant in each phase. The first phase is expected to be operational in 2020 at an estimated cost of Rs 1000 crore, the company said in its mediastatement.

The project, a maiden venture of the company in the state, has already received the necessary environment clearance from the state government and will generate around 3,000 direct and indirect employment.

“With the setting up of the first phase of this greenfield project, the total production capacity of the company will increase by another 2.25 lakh tonnes per annum and generate an additional business turnover of around Rs 1,000 crore,” Emami Group’s director Aditya V. Agarwal said.

Emami Paper is engaged in the production of newsprint and multilayer packaging board producer and has a total production capacity of 3.35 lakh tpa.

Emami Paper diversified into packaging board in 2015 by setting up a state of the art plant in Balasore, Odisha. Packaging board finds its usage in FMCG, food packing, medicines and pharma, playing cards, visiting cards and a variety of other industries.

“With the growth of the consumer market in India, there has been a spurt in demand for high quality multilayer coated paper board in the country. With the completion of the this plant in the first phase, we expect to cater to this increasing demand as our total production capacity will go up to 5.60 lakh tpa,” said P.S. Patwari, CEO, Emami Paper.

In 2017-18, the company had clocked a turnover of Rs 1,366 crore and earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) of Rs 104 crore. Emami Paper’s current packaging board manufacturing facility is located at Balasore in Odisha. The plant has a capacity of 1,80,000 tpa.

This apart the company is also into manufacture of newsprint and writing paper from its Balasore and Kolkata facilities. The combined capacity in this segment is 1,55,000 tpa.
