Saturday, Jan. 25

Brookings American Legion Post No. 74 will hold a pancake, sausage and eggs breakfast from 8:30-11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, at the post home, 1229 Western Ave. Proceeds will be used to support the Boys State, Youth Trooper Academy, and American Legion Baseball programs. A bake sale fundraiser for Cystic Fibrosis will also be held during the breakfast.

Oakwood Lakes State Park’s annual Cool Kids Classic Fishing Derby is set for Saturday, Jan. 25. The event is open to all kids younger than 14, with registration starting at 11 a.m. at the park’s welcome center. Ice fishing runs from noon-1:30 p.m. with weigh-in and prizes to follow. Bait will be provided, and fishing poles are available to those who need one.

The Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship will be held Saturday, Jan. 25, at the St. Thomas More gym, 1700 Eighth St. S., with registration starting at 1 p.m. The contest is free and open to all boys and girls ages 9-14 years old. For more information, contact Justin Goetz at 605-228-4117.

Grace Free Lutheran Church in Bruce will host a Lutefisk Supper starting at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25. Stop by the church for tickets, which are $20 apiece.

Monday, Jan. 27

Brookings County Youth Mentoring Program will host Monday Morning Mentoring Meet-Ups at the downtown Kool Beans Coffee. Feeding South Dakota will provide free food for families in need at its next mobile food distribution from 12:15-1:15 p.m. Monday, Jan. 27, in the parking lot of the Elkton Community Center. Food distributions on a first-come, first-served basis provide an assortment of food that may include frozen and fresh produce, frozen meats, assorted breads and/or canned and boxed items. Please bring something to carry your food in, such as coolers, bags or totes. A photo ID is required.

The South Dakota Art Museum Guild will meet from 9:30-11:15 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, at the museum, with SDSU School of Design lecturer Mark Stemwedel sharing his studio painting practice beyond the classroom. Stemwedel’s talk begins at 10 a.m. with coffee served at 9:30. This is free and open to the SDSU campus community and the public; Art Guild membership not required.

SDSU students are invited to join the University Program Council for a fun Pinterest vs. Reality night. Taking place in the Hobo Day Gallery from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, come choose between cookie decorating or canvas painting and put your skills to the test. Cash prizes will be awarded: $50 for the cookie and canvas closest to Pinterest, and a $20 “You Tried Your Best” prize. Refreshments will be provided. The South Dakota Agricultural Heritage Museum presents “Got Electricity? How Power Changed Dairy Manufacturing” from 6:30-8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28. Join Howard Bonnemann from the SDSU Department of Dairy and Food Science as he explores changes in the dairy industry that were made possible due to electricity. This session will focus on changes in dairy manufacturing with refrigeration and freezing. This event is free and open to the public, and SDSU ice cream will be served.

Brookings Radio will host the Community Blood Bank’s Bloodmobile from 7:30-11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29. Receive a free medium pizza and a special T-shirt with your blood donation.

If you love to paint, join the painting group that meets from 12:30-4 p.m. every Thursday at the Brookings Arts Council, 524 Fourth St. Come work on individual projects and collaborate on art talk and ideas. No pre-registration is needed.
