As part of its new policy, the social media giant has tightened up its content-moderation to take a hard line on “sexual solicitation”.

Now Mark Zuckerberg’s company seeks out “sexual slang’ as well as any hint of “sexual roles, in positions or fetish scenarios”.

Facebook updated its “sexual solicitation” policy on October 15 but users have only started to take notice.

Many people are “horrified” at the changes and think the company has gone too far.

A Twitter user wrote: “Facebook’s new ‘sexual solicitation’ policy is horrifying.

“It bans, among other things, erotic art (even non-explicit), talking about kink, talking about your boobs or butt, mentioning your preferences in sexual partners, ‘sexualised slang,’ and ‘vague suggestive statements.’”

Another said: “Facebook’s community standards on sexual solicitation appear to ban saying ‘I’m gay’

“This seems worthy of correction.”

Speaking to PC Mag in an email statement, a Facebook spokesman said: “This change was prompted, in large part, by conversations with our content reviewers, who told us that the sexual exploitation policy did not adequately distinguish between exploitation (e.g. ‘My ex was a slut. Look at the photos she sent me.’) and solicitation (e.g. ‘Looking for swingers. Friday at 8 PM, [name of bar]. Wear pink.’)”

Facebook justifies its new rules saying: “People use Facebook to discuss and draw attention to sexual violence and exploitation.

“We recognise the importance of Facebook and want to allow for this discussion.

“We draw the line, however, when content facilitates, encourages or coordinates sexual encounters between adults.”

Facebook has already banned pornographic content and the company has expanded its human workforce following user complaints that algorithms were flagging legitimate content for takedown.

These included classic works of art and the American Declaration of Independence.

The Daily Star Online has contacted Facebook for a comment.
