Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram update logos for #BlackLivesMatter

Facebook has switched its logo to black (Facebook)

Facebook has updated the logos of its various platforms to signal its support for Black Lives Matter.

Switching the blue, green and red of Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram to black, the company aims to embrace the international activist movement.

Tensions are overflowing following the death of George Floyd at the hands of a white police officer.

‘The pain of the last week reminds us how far our country has to go to give every person the freedom to live with dignity and peace,’ Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg posted underneath the new logos.

‘It reminds us yet again that the violence Black people in America live with today is part of a long history of racism and injustice. We all have the responsibility to create change.’

The change was noted on Twitter by social media consultant Matt Navarra, with many responding to his tweet that Facebook needs to do more.

George, a black Minnesota man, died after police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck for eight minutes and 46 seconds, despite the unarmed man pleading ‘I can’t breathe.’

On Friday, Chauvin was arrested on suspicion of the third-degree murder of George Floyd, meaning he has been accused of killing Floyd without prior intent, but with disregard for his alleged victim’s life.

Protests have sprung up around the US in response.
