Fears over rising data volumes crashing internet – RTE.ie

Nearly half of IT decision-makers withing organisations in Ireland believe the Internet of Things (IoT) is the future technology that will put the greatest data burden on the internet in the coming years, a new survey suggests.

Independent research from Nasdaq-listed data centre operator Equinix also indicates Irish IT decision-makers fear the impact of rising data volumes in general and the ability to manage them.

Because of this, 60% of respondents said data centre hubs will need to be installed in every town due to the rising number of IoT devices at home and in the workplace.

IoT refers to the interconnection via the internet of computing devices embedded in everyday objects such as fridges and cookers, enabling them to send and receive data.

To handle the rise in data traffic, Ireland’s IT decision-makers believe undersea cables are essential, with 40% of those surveyed by Equinix believing it will not be enough to cope with the surge in volume of data traffic in the next three years.

A further 38% say there will not be enough data centres in the same time-frame.

Equinix’s research has found the proliferation of data-hungry technologies is putting immense pressure on the public internet and 21% of senior IT execs believe data traffic will become so vast that the public internet will crash.

The survey also suggests more and more Irish enterprises are avoiding the public internet and instead choosing direct physical and virtual interconnections to allow for more reliable, fast and secure performance.

A hundred Irish IT decision-makers were surveyed for the research.
