Flipkart partners with Authentic Brands to license and distribute Nautica in India

Bengaluru:Flipkart group has partnered with Authentic Brands to license and distribute fashion brand Nautica in India, the Walmart-owned company said.

As part of the agreement, the Flipkart group, which includes Flipkart.com and two lifestyle portals Myntra and Jabong, will manage Nautica’s online and offline businesses in the country through a network of franchisees.

ET had reported in its May 16 edition that Arvind Fashion was in talks with Flipkart to offload the India licences of a bunch of foreign brands in its portfolio, including Izod, Nautica, Gant and Ed Hardy.

Nautica is an American lifestyle brand that makes apparel for men, women and children. It also sells accessories and home products. Last year, Authentic Brands group acquired Nautica from VF Corporation.

The Flipkart group controls about 65% of the online fashion business in India along with its Myntra and Jabong portals, as per industry estimates.

“The Nautica partnership also allows local production in India, which means we can enable a lot of ecosystem players like sellers and manufacturers to make exclusive lines for India while also launching the brand’s global range,” said Rishi Vasudev, SVP, Flipkart group.

Nautica currently has more than 40 retail stores in India. The decision to pick franchise partners will be taken by the Flipkart group going forward, said Vasudev, adding that the collection will go live in the next few weeks

“Flipkart group will provide Nautica access to over 160 million consumers,” Jamie Salter, Founder, Chairman and CEO of Authentic Brands Group said in a statement. “In addition to extensive market reach, Flipkart brings a high degree of technological capabilities, making them an ideal partner for Nautica,” he said.

In May, Swedish retailer Hennes & Mauritz (H&M) entered into a partnership with Myntra and Jabong to sell its merchandise online in India.

Myntra and Jabong have exclusive rights over eight other global fashion brands for online sales. In 2017, Spain’s fashion brand Mango partnered with Myntra. A few years ago, global labels such as S Oliver, Boggi Milano and Alcott exited India after failing to crack the country’s retail market.
