Only 48 days remain until the world becomes a little bit of a better place when Georgia Tech returns to the field!
Today’s player spotlight is on that of Tech defensive end and Dalton, Georgia native Luke Johns. The 6-foot-5 , 255-pound Johns was a three-star prospect out of Southeast Whitfield County High School in the 2018 recruiting class.
Johns ended his recruitment and committed to the Jackets, two years ago this month on July 28, 2017. He committed to the Jackets over 18 other scholarship offers, a mixture of mostly Group of 5 and FCS programs. He had a pair of other Power 5 offers in Rutgers and Washington State. During his recruitment, Johns was considered a top-100 weakside defensive end in the country.
His first season on campus was quite for Johns, spending the year as a scout team member and doing a lot of work behind the scenes. He didn’t see any official playing time during the season but could possibly find himself in a situation this year that would result in playing time for the Georgia native.
Johns has a lot of what a coaching staff would ask for an ideal defensive end, he’s got great size and a great frame combined with strong athleticism. In high school, the computer engineering major was a three sport athlete, earning letters on the gridiron, on the basketball court, and in track and field. He excelled in all three sports, earning multiple all region or all state honors. As a senior, he was an All-State first team selection. The potential is definitely there for Johns to be a contributor for the Yellow Jackets.
