Gojek CEO Nadiem Makarim leaves his startup to join Indonesian cabinet – Business Insider India

The founder of Gojek, Nadiem Makarim has left his startup to take up a cabinet position in the Indonesian government.

Gojek is a ride-hailing and payments platform, which started in 2015 as a motorbike taxi platform. It also recently announced its video streaming service. Started in Indonesia, the startup is also present in India, Thailand, Vietnam and others. It claims to have over 2 million drivers in India.

Makarim is the founder of the
decacorn (a startup with over $10 billion valuation), which is also Indonesia’s first startup to achieve the status. Makarim himself is one of the country’s richest entrepreneurs.

“Nadiem was summoned to the Palace by the President today to accept an appointment as a member of the new cabinet. We are very proud that our founder will play such a significant role in moving Indonesia onto the global stage,”
CNBC quoted a Gojek spokesperson.

His post in the cabinet is not known yet.
