Google Chrome finally sorted dark mode, but this rival browser has put it to shame

You know what’s even better than a dedicated dark mode? Even more colours, that’s what!

Opera Product Manager for Android, Stefan Stjernelund said: “Opera was among the first apps to introduce a dark mode, way before iOS and Android, and now we are preparing our browser for 2020. Our new UI philosophy is focused on emotions, on how people feel when using the product.

“They don’t have time and need to get to what they want as quickly as possible. We are addressing this need with our new design.”

Not content with simply adding a dark mode – like rival browser (), , , , , and (any minute now) – Opera has decided to add a plethora of different colour and theming options to its light and dark appearances as well. So, not only can you pick between a light and dark mode, but you can further customise that look with additional colours.

The all-new interface, codenamed Squircles, also smooths out the edges and bring a more modern, flat design to the interface. When it comes to colours, you’re looking at a choice between grey, red, blue, purple and green colour schemes. Combined with the over-arching dark and light modes, that totals 10 different custom appearances for your web browser.

That’s not too shabby at all.

“It’s time to move beyond light or dark and to add a splash of colour,” Stjernelund continues. “We want the Opera browser to set a new standard among browsers by providing the unique features we believe a modern browser should have. With this version we are beginning a series of design changes that we are looking forward to introducing to our fans in the near future.”

Of course, this isn’t just a fresh lick of paint. Opera has also done some serious work under the bonnet of its latest release to ensure that its latest browser is still a powerful tool.

Opera features like the free unlimited VPN, the built-in ad blocker, and Crypto Wallet for all your Bitcoin are now just a single tap away. This is designed to streamline the process of browsing on your smartphone, where trawling through endless sub-menus is even less tolerable than it is on desktop machines.

Opera’s browsers, news products and fintech solutions are the trusted choice of more than 350 million people worldwide.

The latest colour new options are now available via a software update on Android now.
