Google Meet: How to use the Zoom rival with no time limit

A couple of weeks ago Google revealed big plans to take on Zoom with its own video meeting app called Google Meet.

Like Zoom, it’s completely free – but you will need to have a Google account to access it.

The benefit is that it works with Google’s other software – so you can schedule a Google Meet chat and add it to Google Calendar.

Perhaps the best feature of Google Meet is that the tech giant has waved any kind of time limit. So you can hold a meeting with up to 100 participants without any time limits for free.

Google is set to introduce a 60-minute time cap on September 30, but until then you can chat for hours.

Javier Soltero, vice president and general manager of G Suite said: ‘Starting in early May, anyone with an email address can sign up for Meet and enjoy many of the same features available to our business and education users, such as simple scheduling and screen sharing, real-time captions, and layouts that adapt to your preference, including an expanded tiled view.’

How to set up a call on Google Meet

Google Meet can be used to either start a meeting straight away or schedule one for a later time.

You can either download the iOS or Android app on either the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store.

Alternatively, you can do it through a browser by following this link.

Once you’ve signed in with your Google account and password, you’ll be able to start or join a meeting by just clicking a button.

If you’re hosting a meeting then you’ll have extra controls such as the ability to admit or deny entry to a meeting, and mute or remove participants.

Once you’re up and running, you can invite other users to join you by giving them the automatically generated code.

If you just want to join another meeting you click the ‘Meeting code’ option and put in the code provided to you by the host.

Many people will already be using Zoom so you may find that easier to use. However, Google Meet offers better features and better security controls.
