Henry Ford Hospital warning public of scammer using its phone number – WDIV ClickOnDetroit

DETROIT – Scammers are evolving with technology. Now even a phone call from a trusted number may not be all that it seems. That’s the case for a number listed with the Henry Ford Health System.

If you get a call from the number 586-263-2300, the hospital’s Macomb location, there’s a chance the person on the other end of the line, might be a scammer asking for money.

“Sometimes it comes up as Henry Ford or a doctor within Henry Ford. It’s not difficult from a technological perspective to spoof numbers,” said interim chief privacy and security officer, John Fowler.

Fowler says because of that the hospital wants to make sure the public is aware of the deceit.

“This is becoming a huge nuisance for our community, which is a huge concern for us. We don’t want anybody to be scammed. We don’t want our great reputation to be tarnished. We’re a trusted partner here in the community,” Fowler added.

The good news is that so far, no one seems to have fallen for the fraudulent calls. But Delaney Gibson who visits the hospital on a regular basis with her mother says it’s a real shame that someone is out here, trying to scam those who depend on the hospital as a vital resource.

“It’s sad that they’re using the hospital though. I mean that’s disgusting. It’s sad. People are preying on the most vulnerable people. That’s the sad part and they know that. People are waiting for so much and it’s just sad that we’ve gotten to that point,” Gibson insisted.

If you just so happen to get a phone call from the hospital that you’re not expecting. It’s best to let it go to voicemail and return it. That should be a legitimate connection.

If you feel as if you’ve been a victim of this scam, you can always make a complaint with the FCC at fcc.gov.
