High blood pressure warning – the feeling on your face that could cause ‘sudden death’


High blood pressure is a common condition that affects more than a quarter of all adults in the UK. The condition, which is also known as hypertension, puts extra stress on your blood vessels and vital organs. Left untreated, high blood pressure could lead to some deadly complications, including heart attacks and strokes. But you should see a medical professional straight away if your face develops a numb feeling, it’s been claimed.

A weak or numb face could be an early warning sign of a deadly hypertensive crisis, warned medical website LiveStrong.

A hypertensive crisis is where your blood pressure raises to dangerously high levels, and it can be life-threatening.

Any blood pressure above 180/120mmHg could permanently damage your blood vessels, and they may subsequently start leaking fluid.

“Called the ‘silent killer’, hypertension rarely produces overt symptoms and can be deadly if left uncontrolled.

“When not controlled, blood pressure levels can rise to the point that you start to experience physical symptoms.

“Some of the symptoms are nonspecific and may be overlooked as being a byproduct of some less serious condition or external cause.

“These symptoms can worsen acutely and in some cases result in sudden death.

“You should seek immediate assistance from a health care professional if you’re experiencing muscle tremors or a sudden fall, trouble speaking or understanding speech, weakness or numbness of your face, or one side of the body or a severe headache from an unknown cause.”

You could also be at risk of a hypertensive crisis if you start coughing up blood, or if you develop a numbness or tingling in your hands, it said.

If you’ve already been diagnosed with high blood pressure and start to develop these signs and symptoms, you should speak to a doctor straight away.

Other more common warning signs of a hypertensive crisis include shortness of breath, nausea, severe chest pain and confusion.

Many people may be living with high blood pressure without even knowing it, as the symptoms only tend to reveal themselves if you have extremely high blood pressure.

The most common high blood pressure symptoms include headaches, finding blood in your urine, and having a pounding in your chest.

It’s crucial that all adults over 40 years old check their blood pressure at least once every five years.

You could lower your blood pressure by eating a healthy, balanced diet, and by doing regular exercise.

Everyone should aim to do at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity every week.
