honestbee is temporarily suspending its business in Malaysia. Here’s why. – Mashable SE Asia

Online grocery and food delivery service honestbee is in turbulent waters.

Following the shutdown of delivery operations in the Philippines and Singapore, honestbee has announced that it’ll be temporarily ceasing operations in Malaysia from July 22, 2019, foreshadowing a possible end to its presence in Southeast Asia.

Times are tough for the bee.

The reason for the suspension has to do with the business’ financial commitments to its merchants and partners.

“After a strategic review of our company’s businesses, our headquarters in Singapore has made a firm decision to temporarily suspend our operations in Malaysia. This is to ensure we can meet our financial commitments to our merchants, partners and suppliers as we carefully review the future of our operations,” honestbee Malaysia said in a statement sent to The Star.

Full-time staff will not be affected by the suspension.

The statement was also posted in full by a Malaysian business, which revealed that honestbee owed them several thousands in unpaid dues.

Jibril Cafe located in the popular suburb of Subang Jaya, Selangor, added that honestbee had been uncontactable for months.

This latest disruption comes right off the tail of significant changes for the company. In May, founder Joel Sng stepped down as CEO to be replaced by investor Brian Koo.
