The minds of every single human on the planet will be plugged into a ‘global superbrain’ by the end of the century.

That’s the prediction from scientists who believe we’ll all be connected to a ‘Matrix-style’ system dubbed ‘the internet of thoughts’.

Researchers from researchers at UC Berkeley and the US Institute for Molecular Manufacturing have published a paper predicting the invention of a ‘human brain/ cloud interface’ in the coming decades.

This technology will link an individual’s thoughts into a worldwide network which will allow them to access the entirety of human knowledge in a second.

However, it will also allow the system to read their thoughts and could bring an end to human freedom.

Robert Freitas Junior, senior author of the research, suggested tiny ‘nanobots’ could connect the neocortex, a part of the brain responsible for consciousness, into a huge ‘synthetic neocortex’.

‘These devices would navigate the human vasculature, cross the blood-brain barrier, and precisely auto-position themselves among, or even within brain cells,’ he said.

‘They would then wirelessly transmit encoded information to and from a cloud-based supercomputer network for real-time brain-state monitoring and data extraction.’

This would allow thoughts to be downloaded as well as facilitating the uploading of information to humans’ brains.

Sadly, you cannot comfort yourself with the thought that this scenario is far-fetched, because the technology is already being developed.

‘While not yet particularly sophisticated, an experimental human “BrainNet” system has already been tested, enabling thought-driven information exchange via the cloud between individual brains,’ said lead author Dr. Nuno Martins.

‘It used electrical signals recorded through the skull of ‘senders’ and magnetic stimulation through the skull of ‘receivers,’ allowing for performing cooperative tasks.

‘With the advance of neural nanorobotics, we envisage the future creation of “superbrains” that can harness the thoughts and thinking power of any number of humans and machines in real time.

‘This shared cognition could revolutionize democracy, enhance empathy, and ultimately unite culturally diverse groups into a truly global society.’
